01Background

Dr. Rinku Das is an ophthalmologist, a phaco surgeon and a glaucoma specialist. She qualified MBBS from MKCG Medical College in Berhampur, Orissa, in 2000, and took her MS in Ophthalmology from Karnataka University in 2009.

Two fellowships followed, and they are the reason cataract and glaucoma are the two things this clinic is known for. In 2010 she completed a fellowship in intraocular lens and microsurgery at JPM Rotary Eye Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha. In 2012 she completed a fellowship in glaucoma at Susrut Eye Foundation in Kolkata.

Practo lists her as having twenty six years of experience overall and sixteen as a specialist, and shows her medical registration as verified. Her Karnataka Medical Council registration number is ORS2015001KTK, issued in 2015.

She has published on the causes of optic atrophy, which was her thesis subject in 2009, and on dysphotopsia following YAG laser peripheral iridectomy in 2012.

The shrine kept inside the clinic

With the blessings of my father, the late Shri Ashok Das

If you have the power to influence the situation, please use it selflessly to alleviate the pain of your fellow being and spread happiness.

His words, as she quotes them.

He always taught her to use whatever power she has to help others and spread happiness. Those words, she says, still guide her every day. Even though he is no longer here, his values and blessings continue to give her strength and purpose.

His portrait sits inside the clinic, with a lamp and fresh marigolds. It is not decoration. It is the reason the free camps happen, and the reason the sixtieth child at a school screening gets the same examination as the first.

04How a consultation goes

Clear explanations, seventeen times over

Google sorts reviews by subject. On this clinic the most tagged subject is not a procedure. It is clear explanations, seventeen times. Patients describe the same thing in their own words below.

I am currently undergoing treatment here and have had a very positive experience so far. The doctor is extremely knowledgeable, patient, and professional. She listens carefully to all my concerns, takes the time to understand the problem thoroughly, and explains the diagnosis and treatment plan in a clear and detailed manner.

Ankur Nigam, Google, a month ago

I visited Dr. Rinku Das for consultation and cataract treatment multiple times. It has been a great experience for all of us. She attends everyone with a lot of patience and empathy. Throughout the course of her treatment, she is very diligent and transparent which makes the whole experience pleasant.

Sankha Chakraborty, Patient review

Dr Rinku is a very good doctor who gives genuine advice and builds confidence in the patient esp senior citizens as they have lot of questions.

05The clinic itself

Two consulting rooms, an examination room and an optical counter

Small on purpose. The person who examines you is the person who operates on you and the person who checks your glasses at the end.

Diagnostics on site

Slit lamp, applanation tonometry, computerised visual fields, OCT and retinal photography, so most questions are answered in the same visit rather than across three appointments in three places.

An optical counter, not a shop

Frames and lenses are dispensed in the clinic and the finished glasses are checked against the examination they came from. That single step is what stops most badly made glasses.

Video consultation

By prior appointment over WhatsApp, for patients who cannot travel, with a follow up visit afterwards. Pain, injury and sudden loss of vision need to be seen in person.
